There are several Freedom Rocks in the Northeast region of Iowa and if you’ve never seen one, it’s time to change that! Ray “Bubba” Sorenson is working to paint one rock in each of the 99 counties in Iowa as a tribute to the military Veterans of our state! You’ll find Freedom Rocks in Butler County (Greene), Hardin County (Ackley), Floyd County (Rockford), Franklin County (Coulter), Mitchell County (St. Ansgar), and Worth County (Northwood)! Have a musical afternoon in MASON CITY

Mason City, Iowa, is also known as the River City. And if you’re a Broadway musical fan, you know that “there’s trouble, right here in River City!” That line from “The Music Man” written by Meredith Wilson has made Mason City famous. Wilson was born and raised in Mason City and a tour of his boyhood home and Music Man Square is a great way to spend an afternoon. You can also take in the McNeider Museum with the famous marionettes from Sound Of Music! While you’re in town, stopping by Birdsell’s Ice Cream is a MUST! I personally always go for the Banana Fudge!

Explore FRANKLIN COUNTY

Looking for a destination to socially distance and spend time slowing down with the family?! Head to Franklin County (County seat is Hampton). There are numerous places to camp like Beeds Lake State Park, Mallory Park, Galvin’s Park in Sheffield, and more. Need other accomodations? Head to Waterloo, Iowa and the Lost Island KOA for a relaxing weekend! Whether you’re the camping kind or not, you’ll enjoy Lost Island KOA. Don’t be fooled by this small town, population 1589. They offer a couple great locally owned shops, a delicious locker & deli, green house, campground, and a delicious coffee shop! Two things we love, ice cream and Mexican food. Those are two things that we’ll drive a good distance for and Tequila’s in Northwood is one of those restaurants! Thankfully for me, Tequila’s combines both of my favorites! The chicken nachos and enchiladas are hot and festive! End your meal with an order of Sopapillas which come with delicious cinnamon ice cream! Not ready to end your night?! Head down the block to Worth Brewing Company for a nightcap!

Spend A Day in Decorah

Part of the driftless area of Iowa, Decorah is nestled amongst several bluffs of Northeast Iowa. Spending time outside is easy with great spots like Dunning Springs, Phelps Park, Trout Run Bike Trail, or the Decorah Fish Hatchery. Head downtown Decorah to enjoy several small businesses, coffee shops, and restaurants. We highly recommend visiting Toppling Goliath Brewery before leaving town too!

The Red Fox Inn in Waverly has been a staple of the community since the 1970’s, but was tired and recently underwent an entire overhaul and is now a gorgeous hotel featuring an indoor pool, coffee shop, restaurant, and bar all on site, so there’s no need to leave! But, if you do want to wonder off property, head downtown to the Bremer Brewing Company, their local bakery & coffee shop, and more!
