Did you know that Dubuque, Iowa is “where Iowa started”? It’s true, back in 1785, Julien Dubuque landed here and established a colony. Ever since then it’s grown and bloomed into an important part of Iowa’s tourism and commerce systems. Whether you’re looking to spend a day or a weekend here, there is lots to do. To help you navigate it all, I’ve put together our 4 things that are the “must do’s” while visiting this river town!
1. Stay at the Hotel Julien Dubuque
While there are lots of lodging options in the area, there is really only one place to stay and that is Hotel Julien. This historic hotel that has been a part of Dubuque since 1839 is the epitome of luxury. Hotel room and suites are finished with high end finishes and amenities that will make everyone feel special. While staying here, we strongly encourage you to check out the restaurant, Caroline’s, as well. Personally, I’d order the Bananas Fosters Pancakes for breakfast! Staying here is the first thing to cross off your list of things to do in Dubuque.
2. Ride the Fenelon Place Elevator
Next on the list of things to do is a fun elevator ride. It’s evident that history is rich in Dubuque and the Fenelon Place Elevator is a big part of this! This outdoor elevator dates back to 1886 and is the longest and steepest elevator in the United States. For low price of just $3.00, you can ride round-trip (up and down) in this unique elevator. Once at the top, make sure to enjoy the views of Dubuque, they are quite spectacular. You can read more about spending the day here as a family, including riding the Fenelon Place Elevator.
3. Watch the Lock & Dam
When you’r ready to slow down and relax a little while visiting Dubuque, we recommend heading to Eagle Point Park. Drive to the “top” and park to catch the views overlooking the Mississippi River and Lock & Dam #11. Not only can you enjoy nature and it’s wonders surrounding the river, you can watch the barges float and move in and out of this lock and dam. There are several aspects of Eagle Point Park to explore and enjoy and it also can be done for a low price of $1.00 per car.
4. Hike at the Mines of Spain
For another great view of the Mississippi during your trip, check out the Mines of Spain! You can combine a hike with yet another history lesson. There is a total of 10 different trails to hike and explore along with enjoying the Julien Dubuque Monument Tower. Here you can learn about the man who discovered and settled the area along with take in great views of the river. My friend Kylie over at England & Iowa has spent time exploring several trails and she talks about them HERE!
