On ony day of the week, T and I will never say no to Mexican food. So, when I had heard that Tequila’s in Northwood, Iowa was some of the best ethnic food around, I knew we had to visit! So, off we went and it was definitely worth the 50 minute drive from our home to Northwood!
Northwood, Iowa is a community of about 2000 people in North Iowa just 21 miles north of Mason City! This thriving community is home to Diamond Jo’s Casino, Worth Brewing Company, Signature’s Supper Club, a growing downtown business, and of course Tequila’s! It’s a great place to visit for a couple of hours!
Tequila’s Mexican Bar & Grill
Located on main street Northwood, don’t be turned off by Tequila’s when you enter as it isn’t a fancy or glamorous looking restaurant, it’s pretty basic by appearances, but the food is anything but. The service is excellent and the food delicious!
The Delicious Food
Of course, I can’t (ok, don’t like to) have Mexican food without having a margarita and their basic margarita was right up there with some of the best I’ve ever had! Of course, you can usually judge the quality of Mexican food before even ordering. How?! By the chips and salsa of course! Tequila’s chips were warm and their homemade salsa delicious, a balance of heat and ingredients!
A trio of enchiladas accompanied by rice and beans was T’s selection for supper and he raved about all of it. In fact, he stated that the refried beans were the very best he’s ever been!
I selected the chicken nachos as my entree and wasn’t not disappointed. The chicken was flavorful and juicy. The nachos were topped with fresh and crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and more! They were so good that I could go for another order of them right now!
Recently, I’ve been on a quest for the best sopapillas in the state of Iowa. So, of course I had to try out Tequila’s. They were crisp, not greasy, loaded up with whipped cream, ice cream, and chocolate syrup! While I was full from the chips, salsa, and nachos, I managed to put most of the sopapillas away because they were that good!
I truly believe after our dining experience at Tequila’s that you can’t go wrong with anything you might order!
Explore Worth County
After you’ve filled your belly with delicious food, head south a few miles to Kensett, which is home to the Worth County Freedom Rock. I’ve seen several of them now and this is my favorite so far! It’s fascinating with it’s almost 3D effect painting!
Continue South on Highway 65 to Mason City enjoying the ghost murals and historic North End Bridge.
And, if you didn’t get the sopapillas, head to Birdsell’s Ice Cream! It’s the best around!
Enjoy your time in North Iowa, the trip to Northwood to Tequilas’ will be worth it! If you want more Iowa Mexican restaurant goodness, here you go! Where’s your favorite Mexican restaurant?!
Yum. There is just something about good Mexican food, isn’t there? We have an amazing authentic Mexican restaurant here in town that is our favorite place ever. Always good food and service, great owners and we love to eat on their patio when the weather is nice. Might be on the schedule this weekend after reading this post!
Eating on a patio with good food and good service is fantastic! We don’t get to do as much of it as I’d like here in Iowa!
Those enchiladas look delicious. Never made it to Tequila’s but have heard only good things.
He loved the enchiladas! We definitely want to make it back soon!
Next time u are up here try the Cama Loco (shrimp and rice) it is THE best @ Tequillas! Glad you enjoyed your trip!
Good tip! I’ll keep it in mind! Thank you!!
I think I need to try this. Mexican food is my fave and Las Palmas hasn’t been cutting it for me lately. Is this a one restaurant or a chain?
It’s so good! T doesn’t care for Las Palmas, but LOVED this! Totally worth the drive!
It is not a chain… highly recommend in coming up and trying it..
We throughly enjoyed our visit.
I LOVE Tequila’s!!!!! The food and the atmosphere are always the best!!!! I hated refried beans, until I had theirs!!!!! The taco salad is amazing, as is the tres locos. I just can’t say enough good things about them!!!!!
I’ll have to try the taco salad next time!! Thanks for the recommendations!!
I have to agree, best refried beans I have ever had! Love this place, we have takeout often! It would definitely be worth the drive! Yummy!
I’m sure if we lived closer, we would do takeout quite frequently! We need to get back soon!
