If you’re looking for a fun activity in North Iowa and don’t want to spend a dime, head to Franklin County and hop on the Rolling Prairie Trail! Franklin County is so lucky to have a fantastic bike trail that is free to use and family friendly!
When the boys were younger and not so independently mobile, M and I would frequently go on bike rides together! Our favorite place was to head the short jaunt to the Rolling Prairie Trail. On this trail, you can walk, jog (which I’ve done many times), bike, or Rollerblade! You just can’t take anything motorized on it!
The Rolling Prairie Trail
The trail itself runs East to West from Hansell to Coulter and going through Hampton! You can also take a small jaunt north to Beeds Lake State Park at one spot! The trail is a crushed limestone base that is well-packed! From Nettle Ave west of Hampton to the eastern city limits of Hampton it is black-topped which makes it super easy for the younger riders to pedal on! It also makes it a smooth, flat surface for anyone who is unsteady on their feet.
This map centrally located in Hampton will give you an idea of the trail and the route that it takes! One thing I must mention is that heading East out of Hampton to Hansell is not 100% finished yet. Head that direction at your own risk! The other thing I want to note, especially if you’re going to be biking with young children is that a portion does run parallel to Highway 3 from Olive Ave to Nettle Ave. It is it’s own path, separated from the highway with gravel, but the first time a semi passes you, it is intimidating!
Trail Amenities
One of the best parts of this trail is the amenities along the route! There are several benches in which you can take breaks and a couple of shelters so you can get out of the sun! Since it is on an old railroad bed, trees are far and few between once you’re out of the city limits of Hampton!
In the heart of Hampton, near the map (above), you’ll also find a fix-it station! It has a few tools and an air pump for anyone to use!
On the East side of Hampton, you’ll find East Park (rather appropriately named don’t you think?). There is a disc golf course & small playground for your children to partake in!
Make a Day of the Trail
If you want to, make a day of your trip on the trail and start with breakfast in Hampton at Rustic Brew, which is just a few short blocks from the trail! After you ride to Coulter, grab a pizza at the Garage Tavern! Neither will disappoint you!
The great thing about the Rolling Prairie Trail in Franklin County is that you can enjoy a day on the trail and not spend a penny! What family doesn’t like free entertainment?! Grab your bike and hop on the trail, you won’t be disappointed!
I can’t wait for the Franklin County Freedom Rock to get finished in Coulter. What a fun destination it’ll be for everyone to get to!
Yes! That will be awesome!!
