Who doesn’t love finding good Mexican food? Well, we recently found some at Plaza Veracruz in Iowa Falls, IA! I love good authentic Mexican food! T, however, struggles with it and truly misses our “local” Carlos O’Kelley’s. He prefers Tex-Mex, but sometimes we just crave some fresh salsa and chips, so we’ve been traveling around North Iowa in search of a Mexican restaurant that will get both of our approvals! I’m happy to announce that we finally found it!
Finding Plaza Veracruz
If you sit at as many school sporting events as we do, you know you get sick of concession stand food! After 4 years of high school sports, the thought of eating a hot dog, walking taco, or piece of pizza as supper makes me ill! Ok, well, not ill, but when we have the opportunity to each some place local instead of the concession stand, we do! So, we recently stumbled into Plaza Veracruz in Iowa Falls on our way home from a football game! I’ll be honest that they won our business by not having a wait for a table! (Tell me we aren’t the only way who pick a restaurant like this?!) Lucky for us, it was a huge success! And don’t be fooled by it’s exterior appearance as it’s located in an old strip mall near a Hy-Vee! You’re in for a great meal!
Inside, we found the restaurant to be well-lit, brightly painted, and clean! We were also greeted and sat promptly, which automatically wins points in my book! Of course, a big bowl of chips and salsa doesn’t hurt either! And the menu?! Well, if you couldn’t find something on there for everyone, you didn’t try hard enough! They feature traditional Mexican dishes, combination platters, salads, as well as some American fare (burgers and steaks). Of course, don’t miss out on the margaritas either! You can choose from traditional flavor or several fruit flavors! The evening we visited, the Raspberry Margarita was a feature!
The Food
I’ll admit that I don’t traditionally favor corn tortilla chips (over flour) because I find them to big too thick and usually have a stale consistency to them! However, the basket brought to us were very fresh and crispy! And the salsa was perfectly seasoned in my mind! It had just the right amount of spice, but not too much and it was definitely fresh!
I’d like to tell you exactly what T & I ordered, but it’s been over a month ago and I can’t remember for the life of me remember! I should have written it down, but I didn’t…welcome to my life! I do know that T ordered a burrito of sorts and it was a great size, piping hot, and delicious (according to him).
I chose a parmesan chicken dish of sorts! It’s very similar to what I choose at most Mexican restaurants. The diced chicken in a parmesan cream sauce was tender, hot, and absolutely delicious! I opted to eat it without the tortillas, but hot flour tortillas were delivered with my meal as well. The bonus was that this portion was so huge there was no way I could finish it, which meant I had leftovers for lunch the next day!
As good as our entrees were, the item that both T and I spent the entire night raving about was the rice! We are definitely Mexican rice fans and have tasted about every variety in North Iowa! In fact, we traditionally order all rice, no beans. This was hands-down the best Mexican rice we’ve ever had anywhere! It wasn’t dry, had a great flavor, and texture! I could go back and get an order of just it! However, I loved mixing my rice with chicken and sauce! DE-LICOUS!
Conclusion
The biggest conclusion is when we have a craving for Mexican food, we’ll be back to Plaza Veracruz and can’t wait to try new things on the menu! Yes, the food was great, but in addition the service was impeccable! Our server answered all of our questions and took all our (my) special requests without the blink of an eye! As a former server, bad service can make or break a visit for me and this definitely was the cherry on the top! So, if you live in the area, are passing through the area, or are looking for a road trip, head to Iowa Falls and visit Plaza Veracruz.

I think the rice makes or breaks a Mexican restaurant too and now I’m craving Plaza Veracruz’s rice! And funny thing is that I usually get a similar dish as you, but with shrimp!
We agree with you about the rice!!!
I love seeing your dining adventures. Looks like a gem.
We aren’t high class diners by any stretch, but we love our adventures!
I totally get the “no wait” reason for choosing a restaurant. Traveling with kids, you do what you gotta do.
Absolutely!! And I get very hangry too, so I don’t want to wait either! Lol!
This isn’t the type of post that you want to read when you’re hungry. 🙂 This restaurant looks amazing. Everything looked so fresh and yummy. And that burrito!
Haha! You are very right! It was very fresh tasting and so delicious!
Tortilla chips are much better warm! The food looks delicious! I have never tried a chicken dish like you enjoyed — I usually choose a mix of tacos. But, now I may veer off!
I agree about the chips! There is something about them being warm that makes them so much better! I like the idea of a variety of tacos!
The food looks amazing!
It was absolutely delicious!!
Looks absolutely delicious! Now I’m craving Mexican food.
I think I’m always craving Mexican food! Lol!
