Sweet & Smokey Baked Beans

How do you celebrate birthdays in your family?! Do you do big parties with lots of presents? Do you pretend that the day does’t exist at all?  In our family, it means getting together and spending some time eating and having fun together!

Family Birthdays!

Recently, we got together with my mom & step-dad to celebrate my step-dads birthday which is coming up shortly! Ribs and brisket were picked as the meat of choice. I then decided that we were going to have a full-on barbecue!  So, I quickly started planning the rest of the menu!

In the end, we feasted on ribs prepared by the way of Jeni Eats, brisket prepared by the way of the Iowa Beef Council, mashed potatoes & gravy, sweet corn (from our freezer), and my Sweet & Smokey Baked Beans!  Of course we had to follow that up with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cheesecake!  YUM!  It was all so good!

The Recipe

I’m not one to open a can of Bush’s Baked Beans and call it good, so I began experimenting awhile ago!  T thinks they are a bit too smokey (is there such a thing?), but I think they are done just right and my mom raved about them and even willingly took leftovers home!

Total time:
A sweet & smokey version of an American classic, with a slight peppery flavor.
Ingredients
  • 43 ounces Pork & Beans
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 T chili powder
  • One t garlic powder
  • 1 t onion powder
  • One and a half teaspoon liquid smoke
Instructions
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a small crock-pot (appetizer size) and let cook for at least 8 hours, stirring once every hour. Season with salt and pepper as you feel necessary.

Cooks Tips:

  • The longer these beans cook, the more the flavor develops, so I strongly recommend cooking them the full 8 hours or at least a couple and then refrigerate overnight before serving.
  • If you think they have too much liquid smoke, just back it down to 1 teaspoon.
  •  They are a great side dish and they reheat just as well if not even better!
  • Pair it with my Honey Mustard Coleslaw to make your meal a complete BBQ!

How fun it was to have a BBQ in the middle of the winter (especially since Iowa is so dang cold right now) and get to celebrate with our family!  What kinds of meals does your family pick for birthday celebrations?
