Everyone family has that classic recipe that you’re infamous for and for our family it is this chocolate cake recipe and it truly is the BEST! For as long as I can remember, this has been known as Judy’s Chocolate Cake in our family, but all you need to know is that it is the BEST Chocolate Cake Recipe there is. And since it’s National Chocolate Cake day, I thought it would be the right time to share it with you!
Favorite Desserts
What makes a dessert good? Well, in our family (or at least in mine), it means it’s chocolate! Rarely does a dessert get eaten in our house if it isn’t chocolate. In fact, I’ve made non-chocolate recipes and the guys have actually said, “There isn’t enough chocolate in it.” So, I don’t even try anymore with non-chocolate recipes!
Early in our marriage, my mom made Judy’s Chocolate Cake for my guys and it was a hit! Judy is one of my aunts and has always been making this cake from scratch. Then, my mom started making the cake and now I make it for my guys! We went through the most recent cake in record time and to quote M, “I see why…” he quipped with a mouthful of cake!
The Recipe
The Best Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspooon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup oil
- 1 cup hot water
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup black coffee
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9×13 cake pan. In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Create a center opening of hte dry ingredients and add all the wet ingredients. Mix thoroughly. Bake 35-40 minutes.
Bakers Tips
- Don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself to be a baker, you can’t screw up this cake!
- The batter is going to seem overly runny! I promise it’s ok and it will bake up well! It’s part of what makes this cake so moist!
- You (nor your family) will taste the coffee I promise!
- Do not overbake this cake! While the timing on the recipe varies, check on the cake at the low end of that. A toothpick or cake tester should come out clean, but I strongly caution at overbaking!
- Frost it with your favorite chocolate frosting! You can make a homemade chocolate frosting, but the cake is really the star of the show, so it isn’t necessary! Personally, our favorite frosting is Duncan Hines Whipped Chocolate Fudge frosting!
- Keep the case well sealed when storing it to avoid it drying out!
- Eat your pieces fast or hide yourself a piece or two because I promise it’ll disappear fast in your home!
