It’s summertime here in Iowa and it’s been super hot! This Homemade Sparkling Strawberry Green Tea is a great refreshing drink to enjoy during this hot months!
I struggle with drinking lots of plain water! I drink plain water while working out, but throughout the day, I need flavor in my water! And, I’ve never been a tea drinker, it’s too bitter! But, throw some flavor in there and I’m game! I mean, who isn’t with that syrupy sweetened flavor?! However, since I’ve cut sugar dramatically in my diet, I’ve ruled these types of drinks out. I’ve followed Simple Roots Wellness for some time and when she posted her recipe for Strawberry Mint Green Tea the other day, I knew I needed to try it! I didn’t have mint green tea in my house, so I made it with plain green tea and enjoyed it, but knew I could do what was needed to take it to the next step!
The Recipe – Homemade Sparkling Strawberry Green Tea
I knew that I wanted to make a homemade strawberry tea with all the fresh strawberries that we have coming from our garden! I also knew that I didn’t want it loaded up with sugar! I decided that making a fresh strawberry simple syrup would be the best way to combine these two thoughts! I also opted to go with plain green tea as I’m not a mint fan.
- 2 green tea bags
- 1 cup water
- 3/4 cup granulated stevia extract
- 3/4 cup water
- strawberries
- Sparkling Tonic Water
- strawberries for garnish
- Heat 1 cup water to a boil and add the tea bags for at least 15 minutes then chill
- In a small bowl, smash at least 1 cup of strawberries into chunks.
- In a small saucepan, place the strawberries, 3/4 cup water, and stevia extract over medium heat.
- Stirring randomly, cook until it reduces into a sauce.
- Once the sauce has formed, strain it into a jar, so to remove the chunks and seeds.
- When ready to serve, mix 1-2 teaspoons of the strawberry syrup, half green tea, and half sparkling tonic in a large glass with ice. Toss in a few fresh strawberries.
Cook’s Notes
- The amount of strawberries to be used is completely up to you. I used approximately 1 cup when making mine.
- The amount of time to brew your tea is completely up to you! It should be roughly double strength flavor since you’ll be mixing it with the tonic water, but if you don’t love tea, then don’t brew it as long.
- The amount of the strawberry simple syrup that you use is also completely up to you! For those that don’t like a strong tea flavor, add more!
- The flexibility of this recipe is one of the things I love!
- Use the strawberries that you removed from the sauce on top of vanilla ice cream!
- Toss a few strawberries to garnish in the glass.
Give this Sparkling Strawberry Green Tea a try and I think you’ll love it! Getting to enjoy a flavored tea without any added sugar makes me look forward to the long hot summer days a little bit more!
