Exploring our Backyard: Happy Acres Nursery in Osage, Iowa

Osage, Iowa, is a great, charming little community, full of delightful gems! One of them is Happy Acres Nursery on the edge of town!

Exploring our Backyard

This past weekend, my mom and I took our annual garden shopping trip! This is something we have been doing at least once a year for the last 4-5 years! This year, we decided to explore a new nursery!  Traditionally, we have stuck closer to home (it is almost an hour drive to Osage for us), but this year, the nursery that was always our “go to” for annuals (plants that only bloom one season and then die) is no longer open!   As I was looking for new supplier, I remembered that a friend of ours owned a nursery in Osage!  We happened to run into said friend at a track meet and I grilled him about the items they carried at their nursery.  It was decided then that Happy Acres Nursery was where Mom & I were destined to land!

Happy Acres Nursery

Tucked off the south side of Highway 9, west of downtown Osage, you’ll find Happy Acres Nursery.  Driving down the gravel drive, you’ll come to a small parking area!  We were greeted by one of the owners and friend, Frank.  He explained that trees & shrubs were around the outside and there was one greenhouse of vegetables and one of flowers!  After that, Mom and I headed off to explore!  I know from visiting with Frank previously that this is truly a family business.  While he claims the nursery is mostly his wife’s project, it is evident that the entire family is involved.  (His son helped us load our flowers and bags of potting soil into our vehicle).  Another friendly family member checked out our purchases when we were finished browsing!  We love supporting family businesses and it’s one of the main reasons we’ll return to Happy Acres Nursery.

Vegetable Options

Exploring the vegetable greenhouse was an enjoyable one.  They have a large variety of peppers, tomatoes, and herbs!   I personally loved that they had a description sheet for each variety of tomatoes, so you could be sure to pick the one that fit your needs! Everything was clearly labeled as well, which I think is a huge bonus!

I also spied cucumbers and melon plants as well!

Flower Options

After selecting our tomatoes and pepper plants (the rest we grow from seed), we moved on to the flower greenhouses!  What a delight that was!  The first thing that mom and I noticed is that all of their greenhouse are well kept!  The floors are swept, there aren’t puddles from watering the flowers (in fact, the walk ways are cement as you can see above), they aren’t cluttered, and they are not overcrowded!

Mom and I both commented frequently that the plants all looked incredibly healthy!  The selection of flowers that Happy Acres Nursery offers is expansive without being too much!  You’ll find the well-known blooms like marigolds and petunias as well as decorative grasses, vines, and so much more!  You can select from 4 pack flowers, 4 inch pots, hanging pots, and combination pots!

I picked up a variety of annual plants and even a new lily for my lily bed!  My flowers look the healthiest after planting than they ever have thanks to Happy Acres!

Conclusion

Not only does Happy Acres Nursery offer flowers, vegetables, shrubs, and trees they have a small collection of garden decor, seeds, and potting soil!  There is definitely something for everyone.  They also have strawberries for sale later in the summer and in the winter have Christmas trees, wreaths, etc!

While it was an hour drive for us, both mom and I commented that we will definitely be back to Happy Acres Nursery!  We guarantee that if you visit the folks there that you won’t be disappointed.
